(schedule)
Assessment ideas:
- Due week 1 (or maybe week 0 before class starts):
- Due week 2: Write a 2-page plan for execution in weeks 4-8. It
should answer these questions:
- Describe background, motivation, context.
- What is the business question or goal?
- What is the statistical question?
- Regarding sample size, n:
- What is the minimum useful n?
- What value is gained from increasing n
- Which n do you recommend? Why?
- What value will answering it bring to the client?
- Describe your data:
- What are the ideal data?
- What data do you have?
- If there is a difference, how viable will your
conclusion be?
- Make synthetic data (reproducible, so
use
set.seed(0) or similar) that support a
positive conclusion and run analysis (below); repeat with
data that support a negative conclusion.
- Describe results from a preliminary analysis. What are the
limitations?
- How should your client assess your work?
Maybe a poster requirement? Or is it unnecessary in light of
presentation slides requirement?
- Write or refer to poster
requirements,
e.g. amstat.org
(or have students research poster requirements)
- Maybe a weekly status report, but I
hope for more specific and measureable assessments.
-
Week 1 (Individual): Each student builds a full analysis pipeline (Notebooks) using synthetic data to support both a positive and a negative conclusion.
-
Week 2 (Team Synthesis): Teams meet the client, realize their assumptions were likely wrong, and collapse individual pipelines into two refined, high-promise strategies with fresh synthetic data.
