Sent: Friday, January 17, 2025 11:03 AM To: stat405-1-s25@g-groups.wisc.edu Hello Data Science Computing Project Students, Welcome to the course. I am John Gillett, your teacher. Our TA is Ming Pei. For our first class on January 21, please visit our course at canvas.wisc.edu and do these things: - Click on the Syllabus link and read at least the "Learning Outcomes" and "Grades" sections. Write down questions you have about the course and bring them to class. - Click on "Schedule" near the top of the syllabus and notice the links in its "1: Th 9/5/24" row: - Click on "Login". Try activating your Statistics account (if you have not already) and logging in to one of our Linux computers. Write down any error messages you cannot address and bring them to class. - Click on "Basic Linux commands". It will guide my first lecture and serve as a reference sheet. - I recommend bookmarking the Schedule. - Plan to bring your laptop to class. On the first day, our TA and I will try to resolve login troubles. I will briefly discuss the course website and goals and answer questions. If time allows, I will show basic Linux commands and have students work in groups to solve some Linux exercises. Here is how to communicate with me and our TA: - Come to class. I welcome questions and comments during lecture. There will be time most days in class for public and private Q&A. - Come to teacher and TA office hours. - Use email, rarely if possible, for personal administrative things. If you have questions in response to this email, please save them for class or office hours. (I have many students in three different courses and, alas, cannot keep up with one-on-one email.) I look forward to meeting you. All the best, John
