Challenges In Applied Statistical Model Building in Time and Space With Very Large Data Sets

Grace Wahba
Department of Statistics, University of Wisconsin, Madison WI USA

We will describe several applications of smoothing spline ANOVA and related variational methods in statistical model building, data analysis, and data description. We will mention some challenging numerical problems to be solved in dealing with large to extremely large data sets. We will describe some practical challenges in model selection when there is no `right' model.
