Come celebrate with us: dinner at the East Bank Club, Wednesday, December 1, 7:00 pm. The Statistician of the Year award is given in recognition of a professional statistician and his or her work. The Chapter's Statistician of the Year is selected by vote of past honorees (all are internationally renowned members of the statistical community). Tradition holds that the award recipient give a dinner talk. Grace will talk about "Classification, penalized likelihood and the support vector machine". Questions about dinner can be sent to Gerald Funk ( gfunk@luc.edu ) or Jerry Enenstein ( JEResearch@ameritech.net). The dinner will be held at the East Bank Club, 500 N. Kingsbury, Chicago. Registration begins at 6:30pm, with dinner at 7:00 pm. As usual, the Lucile Derrick Fund will purchase a limited number of tickets for students who wish to attend. Tickets are $35-$40 per person (based on Chicago ASA membership) if request made by November 17, 2004 and $45-$50 per person request made after that date. Grace is well-known for her pioneering work in many areas, including cross-validation in model building and model tuning, machine learning and support vector machines for classification problems, spline smoothing methods in regression and mixed models, biostatistical model building, and weather prediction models.
