Michael Farmer" To: alap@macc.wisc.edu, yandell@cs.wisc.edu, cnkierga@facstaff.wisc.edu Subject: Better late than never??? Sorry for the huge, unconscionable delay on getting these notes out. Mike ETD Meeting 10 February 1999 Notes PRESENT: Peter Gorman, Lou Pitschmann, Cleo Kiergaard-Sorenson, Maggie Brandenberg, Bill Heiss, Millard Susman, Mike Farmer, Nolan Pope, Deiter Zepenfeld, Brian Yandell, Judith Kornblatt, Henry Cuthbert, Rick Nordheim Minutes from December 1998 meeting were revised and approved. Memo from Roger Clark, director of CIC was distributed and discussed. May require action from Grad School. Need to look at other CIC schools and their committments to NDLTD and UMI. Lou and Peter will follow up. Draft Proposal Brian will add introductory paragraph to proposal indicating future progress towards full electronic submission. Items to review in two years: 1. Contract with UMI 2. Deposit of paper vs. e-dissertations 3. Monitoring of e-dissertations 4. Grad School Review What does the Grad School need to check e-dissertations? 5. E-storage on campus or full access from UMI Doubts were raised as to whether UMI is ready for e-submissions. While some departments on campus are ready for full e-dissertation submission, many are not. Best to wait and reassess in two years. Several suggestions and revisions to the draft proposal were submitted. The revised document has been distributed electronically to committee members. http://www.stat.wisc.edu/~yandell/etd/proposal.txt Contract with UMI Copies of UMI's contract with the university and the individual students were distributed and discussed. It was agreed that the student owns the copyright to his/her own work. Heny provided a modified contract. Suggestions were made for additional clarification of language. A copy of the revised document was distributed electronically to committee members. http://www.stat.wisc.edu/~yandell/etd/umi.doc Follow Up As noted above, suggestions for revision of both the proposal and agreement with UMI have been incorporated in the revised documents, distributed electronically. The proposal has been forwarded to the Graduate School Executive Committee. ____________________________________________________ J.
