If we pass it and send it to the Grad Sch by 24 feb, they can discuss it at their 5 mar meeting. Brian --------------------------------- Draft Proposal to Forward to Graduate School Executive Committee The Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETD) Committee has been considering options for thesis submission in the electronic age. After careful review, we believe the following approach is in the best interests of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. 1. Submission of Dissertation a. Maintain requirement of paper copy submission to Graduate School. b. Review in two years. 2. Transfer of Dissertation to UMI a. Eliminate microfilming. b. Ship paper copy to be recycled by UMI. c. Retain original at UW-Madison. d. Allow possibility of electronic transmission via FTP or CD-ROM. [Cost analysis indicates that replacing microfilm (a) by paper (b-c) submission to UMI does not affect cost. Student will pay same fee in either case, although costs will rise slightly to about $90. Optional cost of cutting CD-ROM would be up to student at this time.] 3. Electronic Access to UMI Dissertations a. Review language of the UW-UMI agreement viz. Electronic Access: b. Engage agreement for two-year period. c. Review in two years. [Need to clarify ambiguous phrases, specify "access" in contract language, and add a termination option. Subject to review by legal counsel.]
