Michael Farmer" To: alap@macc.wisc.edu, yandell@cs.wisc.edu, cnkierga@facstaff.wisc.edu Subject: Notes from 11/11 ETD Meeting Here are the notes from the 11/11 meeting. Sorry they are so late getting typed up! I'm concerned about the format here. I hope that is reflects the discussion (though, not the whole point by point presentation). Let me know if you'd like me to approach this in a different manner. Mike ETD COMMITTEE MEETING 11 NOVEMBER 1998 NOTES PRESENT: Brian Yandell, Cleo Kiergaard-Sorenson, Lou Pitschmann, Mike Farmer, Steve Vaughn, Millard Susman, Dieter Zeppenfeld, Judith Kornblatt, Jordan Lee, Rick Nordheim. ABSENT: Nolan Pope, Maggie Brandengerg, Chere Gibson, Henry Cutbert, Jeanne Boston, Lee Blasius, Chuck DeMets, Bill Heiss, Peter Gorman This meeting featured a presentation by Bill Savage of University Microfilm Inc. (UMI). A number of important handouts were given by Mr. Savage. The notes from this meeting reflect questions raised regarding various points of Mr. Savage's presentation. [NOTE: Do we want to provide a copy of the presentation handout in addition to the notes to those who missed the meeting? The notes may not make much sense otherwise.] UW AND WI FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT If UW does not maintain a copy of a dissertation here, but is available electronically from a campus terminal, does this meet the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act? MICROFILM SUBMISSIONS TO UMI It was learned that the UW is one of two institutions who submit dissertations to UMI on microfilm. UMI must print our film, and then refilm the dissertations. We can save money by submitting to UMI on recyclable paper. UMI and MULTIMEDIA DISSERTATIONS UMI will accept multimedia dissertations on CD-ROM, provided the dissertation uses public domain or freeware applications for its presentation. Copies of these dissertations are provided to customers on CD-ROM. UMI currently accepts files in PDF, CD-ROM, and MS Word, Wordperfect, TeX/LaTeX, and postscript formats. PDF files distributed by UMI are image files. COPYRIGHT ISSUES UMI holds a non-exclusive right to copy and distribute the dissertation. DOCUMENT RESTRICTION * Sales: Variable time, or never * Format: Distribute in a limited format UMI can restrict access to a dissertation in digital format when a journal holds the copyright for part of a dissertation (if permissions have not been secured by the author). PERMISSIONS The author of a dissertation is responsible for securing the permissions from prior publishers of any part of the dissertation. The following handouts were distributed by Mr. Savage: * ProQuest Digital Dissertations (the text of his presentation) * Preliminary Checklist for the receipt and submission of digital dissertations and masters theses * Participating Institution Agreement * Supplier Improvement Program * Keeping the Scholarly Record ____________________________________________________ J.
