[Update on Dec/2021] My group has one Postdoc position available. Postdoc applicants should send me their CV, 1-2 best papers, and keywords "ML Foundation" in their subject line to indicate they have read my website.
I am actively looking for current PhD students in UW-Madison with a strong mathematical background and high motivation. Click to read my research summaries and general expectations. If you are already admitted to UW-Madison and want to join my group, please send me an email.
Preferred candidates:
solid undergraduate training in applied mathematics -- including but not limited to, probability and stochastic processes, matrix analysis, real analysis, functional analysis, and optimization.
strong interests in foundational problems at the intersection of statistics, machine learning, and (theoretical) computer science.
prior exposure to information theory or high-dimensional statistics is a plus, but not necessary.
(most importantly) grit.
A student-advisor relationship is a huge commitment -- both on you and on me. I was extremely lucky to have received the best mentoring I could ask for in my past career. Therefore, I hope to return the favor to the community by being a good mentor myself.
I usually do not directly take incoming PhD students as research assistants.
Most often we will be working together for a trial period (a semester or two), so we get to know whether we enjoy each other.
